Green Veggie Purée & Pasta Sauce for Babies and Toddlers
Dairy free, Egg free, Gluten Free, Nut free, Soy free
About the recipe

This recipe makes enough to freeze for later. I also like to use these as a nourishing pasta sauce you can take straight from the freezer.

This bright green purée is a nutrient-rich powerhouse—perfect for early tastes but versatile enough to keep using well beyond the first months of solids. Broccoli brings fibre and vitamin C, peas add a subtle sweetness and extra protein, avocado offers healthy fats for brain development, and roasted fennel adds a gentle flavour that supports digestion and can help reduce gassiness.
Blended with nourishing, low-sodium bone broth, this smooth and creamy purée is one of our go-to recipes to batch and freeze. It’s mild yet flavourful enough to support flavour learning—and doubles beautifully as a pasta sauce, toast topper, or dip for little ones growing into more textured meals.
Age Appropriate: 6 months+
Serving Suggestions:
Serve as a spoon-fed purée, offer as a dip for soft veggie sticks or toast fingers, or stir through pasta or rice for toddlers. It also works well thinned out slightly and served warm as a comforting soup.
Storage:
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze in baby-sized portions for up to 3 months. We love using silicone ice cube trays or reusable pouches for easy grab-and-go meals.
Note on Bone Broth:
If you don’t have homemade bone broth on hand, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! You’ll find our go-to baby-friendly bone broth recipe in Milk to Meals and Toddler to Table, or view our chicken bone broth recipe here. Not keen to make your own? We’ve rounded up our favourite store-bought options (and everything else you need to know about bone broth for babies) in our blog post: Everything About Bone Broth for Babies and Toddlers.
Ingredients
1 small head of broccoli
3/4 cup frozen peas
1/2 avocado
1 small wedge of fennel (about 2-3 TBSP when chopped)
1 cup bone broth
Method
Wash broccoli and slice a small wedge of fennel, removing the tough core. Separate the broccoli into florets and steam together with the fennel until just tender. Add peas at the end and steam for an additional minute until heated through.
Transfer the steamed broccoli, fennel, and peas to a blender. Add avocado and bone broth.
Blend until smooth and creamy, adjusting the liquid if needed to suit your baby’s stage and texture preferences.
Ingredient Swaps:
Peas can be swapped for zucchini or baby spinach for a different green twist.
If you don’t have roasted fennel, you can try a pinch of ground fennel seed for similar flavour, or simply omit.
Bone broth can be replaced with vegetable stock, water, breastmilk, or formula.
